AIGA Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote
Submitted By: Jennifer Adler
AIGA Chapter: Boston
Artist Statement: It is more important than ever for EVERY woman to vote and make her voice heard. America is a country of immigrants, my family included, and the Yiddish language was often the common language for Jews coming here from other countries. Whether from Germany, Poland, Hungary...everyone knew a little Yiddish. Some common Yiddish words have made it into our vernacular: bubbele (a term of endearment like honey or sweetheart), meshuggeneh (crazy), kvetch (complain), bupkes (nothing or zilch), schlep (drag), tuchus (buttocks), oy (an expression of exasperation), and shonde (a shame). The wonderful thing about America is our diversity of multiple cultures coexisting and thriving to make a unified democracy. But, to make real and lasting changes to ensure everyone has equal rights, that anti-racist policies are put into place, that economic inequities are righted, WE MUST VOTE.
