AIGA Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote
Submitted By: Lana Rigsby
AIGA Chapter: Houston
Artist Statement: We celebrate a century of voting rights, uneasy that women of color don’t share the anniversary and bitterly angry over the murder of yet another Black son. George Floyd summoned all mothers when he cried “mama” as he lay dying in the street; as a mother I found it impossible not to respond. With violent protests raging across the country and nearly 67,000 mourners gathering in Houston to lay George’s body to rest, we joined forces with artist Michael Ray Charles to deliver a message. Rendering Floyd with eyes quietly closed, having just uttered his last words, “I can’t breathe, Mama…”, Michael created a compelling portrait of centuries-old anguish and grief paired with two empowering exhortations: “Mama, vote.” : “Breathe, and vote.”
