AIGA Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote
Submitted By: Johanna Björk
AIGA Chapter: Los Angeles
Artist Statement: Although it is most closely associated with the Black Power movement and, most recently, Black Lives Matter, the raised fist has a long history of use by marginalized groups all over the world as a symbol of resistance against any form of oppression.
It’s a defiant gesture that puts someone in a position of power without having to say a word.
Here, it is combined with a rising sun that represents hope. If you look closely you may also see a feminist symbol. I envision this protest poster as a call for marginalized groups everywhere to put our fists in the air and VOTE for the change we want to see in the world.
