Submitted By: Kelly Walters

Artist Statement: “And so, lifting as we climb, onward and upward we go, struggling and striving, and hoping that the buds and blossoms of our desires will burst into glorious fruition ere long…Seeking no favors because of our color, nor patronage because of our needs, we knock at the bar of justice asking an equal chance.” – Mary Church Terrell
Mary Church Terrell was the first President of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs (NACWC) founded in 1896. “Lifting as we Climb” was the motto of the NACWC and was shared in an address Terrell gave in 1898. This poster acknowledges the work of African-American suffragists, civil rights activists like Mary Church Terrell, the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and 55 years since racial discrimination in voting was prohibited in the United States.
