Artist Statement: Behind every vote is a witness.

A purpose, a promise, a movement, a memory,
a knowing, a truth, a question, an answer,
a fear, a wound, a legacy, a longing,
a rage, a resilience, a breath, a belief,

a courageous obligation that’s lodged in our hearts
to speak up for what's right—
not just wake up to what's wrong—
in this common and confused convergence where we lie
between the bravery and brokenness of humanity.

When the day and the time
come to call and to cast,
we can’t let our vote go to waste.

Gather all your resolve, your torn bits and pieces;
hold them like treasure in the nooks of your arms
and carry them with you to the boxes and booths at our feet.

I'll gather and carry my torn pieces, too,
picking up the slivers that have fallen behind,
holding a space for each other to walk
and to shoulder the wisdom and weight
of this moment—this mountain—together.

From the lines where we stand to the ones that we draw,
we'll see that the corners and caverns
of the dark paths behind us
have done the soul-wrenching business of leading us here:

to strength that we share,
and the love that we know,
and the chance to reclaim all our beautiful, bountiful, untethered
footsteps ahead.
